Palm Beach County Schools Superintendent Wayne Gent
Last week, Extra Credit raised the question of whether Wayne Gent, Palm Beach County’s outgoing schools superintendent, is underpaid compared to other superintendents, citing a national survey showing most superintendents in similar-sized districts earn substantially more.
Now a report by Gent’s staff begs the question once more. It turns out that the superintendents of two smaller Florida school districts – Duval County and Pinellas County – earn more than Gent.
And not just a little more.
Duval County’s superintendent, who oversees nearly 60,000 fewer students than Gent, earns $38,000 more a year, according to the school district report.
Pinellas County’s superintendent, who oversees 82,000 fewer students, earns $22,000 more.
Of course, Gent’s current base salary of $236,385 is huge by almost any standard. But as with the rising pay of corporate CEO’s, the nationwide competition for top schools executives can have the effect of pushing salaries up to strange levels.
The report was produced at the request of School Board member Frank Barbieri, who wanted to know the salaries of superintendents in other large school districts in advance of today’s meeting.
A salary range for the new superintendent will be one of the key issues board members deliberate as they begin the search for Gent’s replacement.
