Lee County rescinds opt out of testing vote, but battle not over

Update: Tuesday morning, the Lee County School Board reversed itself on the matter of opting out of required state testing, Mary Fischer said that she changed her mind after more research into the potential repercussions of the move.

The two board members who remain in favor of opting out say they will try again  and “make it stick,” according to an account in the Fort Myers News-Press.

The superintendent has asked her staff to form an “opt out” committee to research how other other states have bowed out of testing and what can be done at the district level, the paper reported.

Original post: The board member who swung Lee County’s 3-2 vote to opt out of state-required standardized tests is asking for another meeting so the board can reconsider its stand, according to the Fort Myers News-Press.

The newspaper reports that board member Mary Fischer refused to speak to the reporter on the matter but promised to issue a written statement later today. According to the newspaper’s account, Fischer was at first reluctant to vote in favor of opting out, but then cast her tie-breaking vote to support the move that was unprecedented in Florida.

Fischer requested this second meeting tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.
